This gentle “tru” fairy tale succeeds on nearly every level, becoming an intelligent handling of a tabloid story. In 1817 a young foreign drifter (Phoebe Cates, never better) sets a small portion of England buzzing that she is a royal princess from an uncharted land. This feels like a magical movie with slightly overcooked characters, such as Kevin Kline’s Greek butler. The supporting cast is older than in most movies of this type–no cute actors, we have performers with chiseled features and gruff voices. Director Michael Austin’s decision to approach this as a tru story keeps things firmly grounded so the eccentrics are not overplayed. Beautifully filmed by the great Freddie Francis (Glory) and featuring a surprisingly rich cast (Stephen Rea, Wendy Hughes, Jim Broadbent, and John Lithgow), this is simply the best family movie since The Secret Garden. –Doug Thomas

Made for Britain’s Channel 4, Dollan Cannell’s dynamic documentary may be non-fiction, but it often plays like pitch-black comedy. While screen history has produced King Kong, Godzilla, and other seemingly indestructible creatures, Fidel Castro’s close calls and near misses put most such fictional characters to shame. As Cannell claims, “More people have tried to murder the world’s most famous Socialist than any man alive.” The director examines the reasons opponents have been gunning for Cuba’s president for over four decades. Diplomats, activists, secret agents, and would-be assassins provide potential answers. The consensus is that Castro turned out to be more of an oppressor than the liberator he promised to become. Cannell then looks at some of the bizarre methods employed, from poison milkshakes to exploding cigars. Stylistically, he alternates between archival footage (including clips from crime films and television shows) and contemporary interviews. He further jazzes up the proceedings with a retro thriller soundtrack. This keeps things moving along, although more concrete information, like specific dates, would’ve been nice. That said, Fabian Escalante’s companion book, Executive Action: 634 Ways To Kill Fidel Castro, helps to fill in some of those gaps. In the end, Cannell isn’t making fun of Castro–or his country–but riffing on the parallels between the leader’s real-life misadventures and the cinematic kind. The phrase “stranger than fiction” predates El Presidente, but when it comes to the Beard, all bets are off. Extras include interviews with Cannell and former President Jimmy Carter. –Kathleen C. It is only natural to be scared of zombies, and to prevent them from laying waste to your home. A more relaxing approach, however, is to be bored and vaguly annoyed by them, or, better still, not to notice them in the first place. This is the premise of Edgar Wright’s British comedy, which may be responsible for kicking off a new and specialized genre of slacker horror. Shaun (Simon Pegg) lives a supremely uneventful life, which revolves around his girlfriend (Kate Ashfield), his mother (Penelope Wilton), and, above all, his local pub. This gentle routine is threatened when the dead return to life and make strenuous attempts to snack on ordinary Londoners. The finale, in which the pub turns into an Alamo, is the bloodiest, most orthodox, and least witty part of the movie; far sharper are the early scenes in which Shaun wanders happily to the local store along a battered, zombie-dotted street and pulps his attackers with a cricket bat. The central joke is so snappy and well sustained that you barely catch sight of the ominous vision on offer: a country that already feels like death. -Anthony Lane
